There are reports buzzing around the Internets that Microsoft’s new no-controller game system struggles to see darker-skinned folks. Apparently this has to do with the infrared technology not working well with skin that contains a lot of melanin, the pigmentation chemical in human skin. This is interesting from a purely scientific point of view, but horrible for Microsoft PR.
But, it turns out that many of the report are over-blown. Here’s a write-up from Gamezine.co.uk that shows that the problem isn’t as bad as others are making it out to be. In fact, here’s proof-positive that the system is pretty color blind:
The system also work well with extremely white people, like Jimmy Falon.
