The Virginia Chamber of Commerce, or Why Web Design Matters

Increasingly I’m seeing having a bad website as a measure of an organization’s ability to recognize and deal with problems effectively.  By the looks of it, the Virginia Chamber doesn’t have the ability to deal with problems, or recognize that the teal and yellow monstrosity that is its public face to the world is a design and usability nightmare.  I’m interested in starting a business in the state of Virginia, but that sort of thing is nowhere to be found on this site.  But then again, neither is anything else.

Thankfully, my current employer recognizes the value on giving those with the greatest expertise on a subject the ability to make changes, which is why Mercatus.org will soon be a much better site.  If you haven’t seen my work at the Mercatus Center, check out Neighborhood Effects, Economic Recovery Digest, or the site for Tyler Cowen’s new book, Create Your Own Economy.  They’re not perfect sites, but they present information in an straightforward way while avoiding visual clutter and features for the sake of having features.  I think that’s something that others, like the VA Chamber, haven’t accomplished.
